5 tips for the perfect action shot

Use the tripod

The tripod is the most important equipment in the photographer’s arsenal as it helps to keep the camera in one place. It is important to have one since while clicking action shot, things get messy and the composition of the image would be ruined if the camera is handheld. It is always better to click a picture before the scene because that way you have a clean image to use in Photoshop which helps in the editing process where you can check on the things missed during action shot.

Shoot it manually and set the shutter

Shutter speed can make or break the image it is everything in an action shot. It is a very crucial setting, so it needs to be adjusted first. If the image you are trying to capture crisp sharp pour or sprinkle it is better to increase the shutter speed, in case of a blurry pour or sprinkle you must decrease the shutter speed. You can also try using shutter speeds at 1/160 or above for crisp pours. Secondly adjust the ISO it is better to stay under 800 but if you want to capture dark and moody images then the ISO needs to be set a bit higher.

Focus on Manual

It is better to use manual because auto focus captures many unpredictable shots where you end up with many unusable shots. You can set the focus on the area where the moving food will have an impact with the non-moving food or object.

Adjust the food to your movement

Sometimes it is hard to click pictures since the food is too small or too dense to have a smoother spill. It is better not stray away from the original recipe, but few tweaks can be made here such as using some water to the sauce for a smoother spill or using coarse sugar instead of the icing sugar to make the grains more visible.

The right angle

Different angles have the best shot in an action shot so it is important to think which angle will have the most beautiful effect on the image. It is important to check the background also if it is contrasting enough so the action is visible on the capture or if there is any distraction that making the viewer lose focus from the action.
